How does TWJ keep a major mass transit system running smoothly?
Denver Regional Transportation District

The Regional Transportation District, or RTD, is the regional authority
operating public transit services in the Denver metropolitan area in
Colorado. The RTD employs more than 2,500 people, serves 2.5 million
people, and provides over 80 million rides a year.
Key Business Challenge:
- Develop new organizational structure to guide information technology initiatives
- Collaborate closely with senior management
- Harness new technologies in a user-friendly fashion
The Solution
At the Denver RTD, TWJ worked directly with the organization’s
senior management to develop both a new organizational structure and a
new technology direction for the information technology function. The
new strategy included the adoption of a project-oriented, matrix style
organization with a lead role for a new Program Management Organization
and a move to standards-based software technologies and applications.
As another major element of this engagement, TWJ directed the design
and initial phase implementation of a real time passenger information
system that predicts bus arrival times at stops, and then developed a
comprehensive systemwide deployment plan for this technology. This plan
addressed planning, technology, and financial road maps.
As a separate project, TWJ developed a mobile application that
enables drivers of the RTD’s demand responsive Call-N-Ride
services to handle the booking and scheduling of passenger trips using
a wireless mobile computing device. This mobile application will soon
be extended to include Web-based and automated voice-activated
self-service reservations by passengers.
